I seriously considered renting a car (which is pretty big for me, as I am quite nervous about driving, let alone on the opposite side of the road) but I didn’t have a proper license. I am dying to go back there, especially now that you’ve tempted me with good food and unique landscapes!

Nice account of your trip up to Hokkaido. As your experience shows, many independent travellers unfortunately never make it north of Sapporo because of the sparse train system. I live out in one of those sparse areas, and it’s definitely worth a look if you are into good food and unique landscapes. Eastern Hokkaido in particular is a spectacular area, but nearly impossible to see efficiently without wheels.

I bet you can get Royal Milk Tea at any Japanese or Asian type store! It’s sooo good, perfect sweetened milky tea. I love the hot stuff!
