Tweed Bike Ride

February 1st, 2010

Move over, Cycle Chic from Copenhagen! Portland has some super stylish bike riders too, and last weekend Bike Portland organized their very first Tweed Ride. I head about it, but forgot and had kind of a lazy weekend… too bad, because it looks like I missed out! Luckily Jessica (Domestic PDX) posted about it so I was reminded to check out all the awesome photos. I can’t decide which tweedy folks are my favorites: the ladies lookin’ lovely, the dapper gents smoking pipes, or this funny baby (it doesn’t even look real!!) who could care less about tweed but is having a good snooze on the ride.

All photos from Bike Portland’s flickr, edited a little bit by me. I can’t help it, I am addicted to vignetting.

Ok — we totally have to organize a group of fashionable Portland ladies and join this ride next year!

When the top picture popped up in Google Reader, I was certain it was from some European street style blog! lol. I guess this goes to show you that there are loads of tweed lovers Stateside too. ;) Oh gosh… I am drooling over all this tweed goodness! I especially love the gal wearing the green velvet waistcoat… amazing!

I am so glad you posted this! This explains the folks we saw at Grand Rapids’ ArtPrize last fall. We were a little confused (“Look at those hipsters!” “I love what they’re wearing!”) Now I know it’s called Tweed Ride. Everyone was dressed fabulously–just like your Portland riders–which was delightful for me, since unfortunately I don’t often see a lot of vintage worn around here. Thanks for the post!

I wish we had cool things like that in my town! The biggest bike-related event here is “tour de tech terrace” and it’s basically an annual 500 person bike-from-house-to-house-and-get-really-drunk-until-the-cops-come-and-make-everyone-go-home thing. College towns…

It was a fun ride, got us into a part of town we rarely see, and had fun chatting with people along the way. Despite a wee bit of bike trouble that of course popped up halfway through the ride, it was a really nice day.

Always nice to have an excuse to dress up, too :)

And there is a flickr group as well, called Tweed PDX. Lots of great photos.

Definitely going again next year if they do it again. I’m sure they will, as over 150 people turned out this time. Cheers!

They make it look so effortless. Damn! I wish I looked this good riding my bike. I always end up all red, sweaty and out of breath….
