Special announcement! It’s finally snowing in Portland! It started this afternoon and is still going strong, I’m actually pretty surprised at how much there is. I was expecting a little snowfall that would quickly melt away, but it is piling up like crazy! My chickens are not impressed. Last year we had a crazy snowstorm that basically shut down the whole city because we weren’t equipped with snow plows. People were cross-country skiing down the roads, it was so weird to see. I don’t know if that will happen this time, but the end of December is the perfect time to be a hermit, so I don’t mind.

I took these photos across the street from my house, if I was actually going somewhere I’d need some layers on my arms and cozy mittens. I love this coat though, I bought it for the shop but I hope I get a couple of chances to wear it before it leaves me. The little buckle in the front is like a shiny patent leather-ish material, and the lining is a surprise PINK!

Taking photos next to my neighbor’s house is fun, because their house looks so much like a cozy cabin. It makes it easy to pretend that I’m out in the woods, and waiting inside is a wood-burning stove and lots of wool blankets to curl up with. Maybe a hot toddy or boozy hot chocolate on the stove? Sounds good to me.
These next photos were taken a couple hours later, I’ll have to take more tomorrow too- who knows how much snow there’ll be in the morning! It’s pretty fun to take flash photos in the snow, trying to channel Wilson Bentley. I could spend hours examining each and every one of his snowflake photos.

Speaking of spending hours looking through photos, a very special package arrived today for me from Berlin! I bought a giant lot of vintage photos on ebay about a month ago and I am so excited that they’re finally here. I’m not joking when I say a giant lot… there are at least 1800 photos! Yikes. I promise to scan the best ones. I’ll probably keep some, but the rest will be going out with my shop orders. Ok, I’m going to go back to watching Donnie Darko and warming up with tea- I had to take a break to document this snowstorm!

oooh, if you want an even awesomer tea place to try, check out upton tea imports, based in massachusetts. i looked at the harney site and while it is nicely designed, they have a mere fraction of what upton has. the upton site is a bit frustrating, mainly because there is SO MUCH, but they’ll send you a free catalog that is fun to peruse and highlight things in. plus, for $1-$2 (depending on the tea), you can get sample sizes of any tea, so you don’t have to commit or worry as much about cost. so far i’ve gotten quite a few cups out of my samples (5+).

I hate snow, but I bet it’s extra pretty in Portland. And you’re right–it’s sort of a perfect time for it. I love the blacks and whites of your outfit . . and that ’60s cape-coat was such a find!

Your plaid coat is wonderful and it seems like it’s snowing everywhere! I love coats with surprise lining–I have a black jacket that has the prettiest pinstripe lining inside and a camel coat with paisley lining and a pair of teal flats with a floral lining. It just feels like a little secret that only I get to know about.

Wasn’t it beautiful today!? I saw you taking pictures today! Also, were you at Best Baguette last week? I think we’re neighbors! (hope that isn’t creepy…)

Chickens!! How is it having chickens? My husband and I were just talking about maybe wanting to get some in the next couple of months. He got me two goats for Christmas, not for milk or anything, just as pets haha.
I remember hearing about the snow in Portland last year, I was in Seattle and we flew in like 2 days before the airport was shut down. Thats some crazy snow for those two cities
