December Miscellany

December 21st, 2009

December is almost over! It seems weird that Christmas is this week, I’m not really feeling it this year. We have a little tree and I think it’s sweet, but last year around this time we were going crazy with Christmas movies and were somehow more into it. I know it will be nice though, we have some cool festive plans. Totally going to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie on the day, it’s going to be like getting a present! Going to love it in all of its hilarious glory.

Let me show you some recent thrift finds!

So, while I was at my favorite thrift store I was grumbling to myself in my head about how it’s a bummer that all the awesome designer sales happen in big fashion cities (New York, LA, aka not Portland) and that my chances of getting anything from a designer that I like at a sweet discounted price were really low. I thrifted my cares away and came home with some neat things, including this striped top that turned out to be A.P.C! I think the thrifting gods hear my inner complaints and were determined to prove me wrong, and zapped this shirt onto the racks for me. I think it might be a men’s shirt, because it’s kind of big, but it’s long enough that it makes a great tunic/mini dress type thing. I think I might try taking it in. Love stripes so much! I also got lucky and found a whole bunch of silky pink and blush tops, and a funny little fur collar that I ended up wearing to a party this weekend.

I actually sold this cardigan in my shop (it’s headed off to Bordeaux, France!), I loved it a lot because it’s a vintage REI piece, which is a Portland outdoors company! I love finding local stuff, even if it’s just from the 70′s or 80′s. Hiding under the sweater is another classic, fitted striped top. I have one already that I thrifted (J. Crew), but I wanted another because I wear it so often and now I don’t have to fret over laundry as much. You can see more of my silk finds too!

In an attempt to avoid last minute Christmas madness, I whipped up some Christmas cards in time to get some sent off to my friends, family and dalas’ family, since we won’t be seeing any of them in person. Hopefully they arrive in time? I love foxes so I thought it would be fun to make little wintery fox cards. I drew them all while working on re-watching seasons four & five of LOST!

I scribbled this little drawing after getting back from a too-long trip out to the suburbs to pick up my magazine. I always get some tasty sesame snacks and a Hitachino nest beer!

Last night my friends Lauren, Jillian and Zachary hosted a fun SOULstice party at their amazing mid-century brick home. It’s one of my favorite places to be, and when I arrived the fireplace was already roaring and people were dancing to some cool tunes. I had some delicious cookies, hot buttered rum, mulled wine, kind substances and lots of laughs. Jillian and I got really worked up talking about the time that Criss Angel forced those monkeys to get mindfreaked by his tricks. A whole bunch of musicians showed up over the course of the evening and at some point the dining room zone erupted into this impromptu dirty gypsy jam session, with an upright bass, guitar, violin, clarinet…. maybe more?? It was wild. A great way to welcome in this blustery season. We went out for a seriously delicious brunch at Screen Door the next morning, and spent the rest of the day lounging around, fire in the fireplace, knitting the softest things and being generally chilled out.

I didn’t get a chance to snap a photo of my outfit for the party, and it’s raining pretty much non-stop these days so I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to take photos, so I decided to draw it instead! I’m so glad that there is a cool What I Wore Today drawings group on flickr, I’m sure a lot of you have seen it already but this is my first actual contribution.

Many of my party outfits involve those awesome silk tap shorts. I wore them for Canadian Thanksgiving, my art opening, this party… they’re so good! I hope they go on sale someday so that I can buy another backup pair. It was my first time wearing anything furry this year too, and it was fun! A collar is great, and it helped to keep me feeling extra cozy (although of course, the mulled wine and rum butter concoctions helped too!). I’m still trying to figure out what I should be doing today, the rain puts me into hibernation mode and all I want to do is watch movies and curl up under blankets with some tea.

I can’t tell you how much I love this post, Anja! I always enjoy seeing your drawings and such, and reading about things going on and great thrift finds is always fun! :) I just love, love, love those beautiful cards you painted! SO gorgeous!

I think some years you’re more into the holiday thing than others, you know? I’ve decided that as an adult, some years the holiday season just doesn’t do it for me. Last year was one of those years for me too. lol.

Anyway, thanks for sharing all your finds and art with us! :)

Those fox cards are amazing!! They remind me of a little fennec fox that my friend drew for me once. (The best animal ever)

Excellent thrifting finds! I think this post is pushing me toward the thrift store – and that’s a good thing because I haven’t been in a while. :)
