Topknot
December 15th, 2009

Hey, look what I can (almost) do! A lil’ topknot, messy bun extraordinaire popped atop my head. Unfortunately my hair isn’t long enough for all of it to be in there, so the back was sort of haphazardly pinned back. Not really good enough for actually going out with this style, but good enough for inside the house on a dismal day. It’s so rainy!! I’m going to brave the raindrops and trek out to the suburbs so that I can pick up the December issue of Fudge Magazine at the Japanese bookstore… I wish they could mail it to me! Maybe I will find a cute teapot while I’m there.

Having hair that isn’t incredible short is pretty fun! dalas is the one who loves short short hair, so for the past couple years I’ve been hacking it away, but I’m finally letting it grow a bit. I think he gets a say in how I do my hair simply because he’s the one that has to look at me all the time (ha!), but now it’s my turn to be the boss, and the scissors are banned for a while! I might get a trim soon to fix the ends, by an actual hair stylist maybe! I’ve been cutting my own hair since 2003, so naturally the ends aren’t exactly even. I don’t know if I could let my hair grow out long enough to do a full topknot, and I’m already experiencing some of the annoyances of long(ish) hair. For one, it’s so charged up with static electricity these days! We had a really cold, dry week and having strands of hair sticking to my face and flying up into the air was sort of dumb. Every time I touched something metal I would get a shock! I’ve been wearing this little heart necklace a lot lately, I think it is a really easy way to make a boring-ish outfit more interesting. I’m wearing a light gray top that I picked up at the last clothing swap, I think it’s from Old Navy or something, and a striped tank top that I wore all summer long underneath. I LOVE stripes these days, so much, and it’s fun figuring out ways to combine the stripes with other pieces. I’ll talk more about stripes later when I share some pictures of my latest thrifts! I’ve been lucky lately. Time to suit up and get cozy before heading out into the rain!

Oh, do I know that feeling! I’ve gone back and forth between short an long hair for the last 5 years, still not fully able to choose my favorite length… when I try to get my husband’s opinion, he seems just as lost at which is his favorite… but there is always this desire to please him above anything else. I commend you for deciding for yourself, I know how tough it is – and I think you look gorgeous!

Oh, I forgot to ask – where is that bookstore? We are visiting Washington/Portland after the first of the year, and I would love to visit a Japanese bookstore! (as we do not have any here ;_;)

Yeah, the ride to work this morning was not the most pleasant experience. I’ll take the cold and dry back, please
My wife is exactly the opposite regarding hair, she likes it short, I like it long
Finally after years she’s grown it out a little, and thankfully isn’t minding it too much, as long as it changes a little from time to time so she doesn’t get too bored with it.
Good luck with yours! And good luck in Beaverton, if you decide to venture out. It’s bad enough in good weather

Your hair is lovely. I’ve had short hair for about 3 years now and I don’t know if I could ever go back to long hair.. all that static and those fly away hairs (my hair is really fine)… it was a nightmare. At least when it’s short I can style it and it stays in place. My husband likes it longer but I’m so miserable when it’s long that I think it’s in his interest to have a wife with short hair that’s happy lol.

You look so pretty! Well, you always do. I love that hairdo on you.
I’ve been growing out my hair for years and years. The one time I cut it short, it didn’t feel right! I like having it hide my face from time to time, and it gives me something to play with when I get fidgety. Haha.

i love the little topknot and bangs! we have about the same hair length but alas, your hair works so much better because it is straight! maybe soon i’ll have a cute topknot with workable bangs too

aw, this makes me miss my long hair. except i wasn’t very good with it and all i actually knew how to do was wear a top knot! but it’s always fun to let your hair grow out and least once. i had never done it before and it was definitely fun while it lasted.

I love it!!!
I cannot get my hair to stay in a topknot like that, and when I do, it just looks funny. The bangs really help the style look cute–that sort of French girl cute!

I love your longer hair. I am definitely more of a long hair person (on my boyfriend as well!). I love your blog. You always have really amazing images. Hope your holiday season is going well so far.

You’re lucky to be one of those girls who look good with long or short hair! I like the way your bangs fall just above your eyes like that. Pretty :]

I love your bangs + top knot! How funny, I just did a post about wearing my hair in a topknot a couple days ago….Nice to see the top knot is making a comeback.

OHHH! I want a top knot so badly!

i think you look really pretty with the longer hair – it softens your face a bit. but the short is cute too, so edgy!
i always want what i don’t have. i will spend years growing out my hair, always with the ultimate goal of having long, pretty braids. then i do it and realize my hair is too slippery to stay in braids and usually end up cutting it off. short hair looks great in hats!

JUST SAY NO TO LONG HAIR!

[...] 3. Long(er) hair–I can almost make a ponytail! The topknot remains the true measure of hair progress… okay, I just want to be like Anja. [...]
