Fruit of Paradise
December 6th, 2009

Last night I watched a film called Fruit of Paradise by Věra Chytilová, a Czech filmmaker who is most famous for Sedmikrásky (Daisies), made in 1966. A while ago I posted about the outfits in Daisies. Fruit of Paradise was different and weirder than Daisies, and followed less of a storyline, or the storyline was more confusing. There is obviously an underlying Garden of Eden theme, and the lady in it is also married to one (or both?) of the male characters, there’s a lot of chasing and rolling around on hills and food and crazy lady times. The first half of the movie had me pretty captivated, which is when most of the really interesting and psychedelic visuals are happening. I am always so impressed by what kinds of unique graphics were achieved back then using totally analog equipment, I think it’s often a million times more stunning than what can be made on a computer. There are a lot of incredible shots with layered graphics, slowly moving figures overlayed with weird, close-up, shifting and changing plant details… what could be more perfect? I could watch that shit for hours! The second half of the film lost me, it’s was more regular, boring and confusing than it was visually enticing, so if you decide to watch Fruit of Paradise (it’s on Netflix!), don’t feel bad if you end up fast-forwarding most of the second half. Or, you can just enjoy these film stills that I took! If you want to see/save any of the individual images, they are in my film stills set on flickr.

Those are so lovely . I still have to see Daisies, oh man, but this one looks really inspiring too. Especially the stills of the girl on the beach in the white dress.

i loved daisies, but really only for the visuals (i tend to not dissect movies to see if there is a deeper meaning. i very much take things at face value, and a film like daisies is chock full of stunning visuals that need no explanation). i think i will check out fruit of paradise and see how it measures up!
