Oh, what’s this? A fashion editorial based on a classic fairy tale? Lily Cole? Yes, I will like this. Can you spot Lady Gaga? Ha! via My Modern Closet. Shot by Annie Leibowitz, of course. To be honest, I wish someone else had tackled this theme, because Annie Leibowitz is known for this stuff already, so it doesn’t feel as interesting or creative as it might be if another photographer was showing their take on it? This editorial has that Tim Burton vibe that sometimes I’m not very into. I’m sure that sounds surprising, because while I like Tim Burton in theory, most of the films he has made in the past few years haven’t really been my thing. I like the old ones! I bet Fudge Magazine (a Japanese magazine, my subscription should finally start in December!) could bust out an amazing fairy tale editorial!

Wow, these are amazing! Thanks for sharing

Whimsical and pretty yes (I can’t resist a fairytale myself), but I hear you about the Annie Leibowitz interpretation… there’s something quite stagnant/too posed about them which I find rather unnerving… fairytales call for freedom. Magic! Motion!
BTW, past neighbor sighting! Hi Quincy!

i hear ya on the tim burton vibe. i don’t like it when other people are trying to have that “tim burton” look to whatever they are doing. it’s a bit contrived. that being said, i still enjoyed the photos and really like the first dress.

Looks like someone set that last girl’s fart on fire.

Neat!
I think most of the scenes/characters are set pieces from the Met Opera’s Hansel + Gretal (the fish-man, the tree-men, the kitchen, etc). Weirdly enough, Josiah and I spent New Year’s day 2008 watching it.
And Tim Burton has had so many misfires in the last decade that it’s hard to even grant something with a magical, dark-fairytale aesthetic the title of “Tim Burton-y” anymore. His look these days seems to be quite garish (Willy Wonka, the new Alice) and not nearly as charming or imaginative as the look he used to be identified with.

wow, Anja.. I love these shots! and I know what you mean about old Tim Burton being the best. NOTHING tops Nightmare Before Christmas or Edward Scissorhands.
