Simultaneous Seasons

I am enjoying fall, but seeing this photo reminds me of spring, it makes me miss that guy! Little ol’ spring, with rainy days and pink flowers exploding everywhere, such a nice friend of a season. This look is so girly and isn’t something my outfits have been inspired by lately, but it’s a great reminder of something that I do love! The plain black t-shirt dress and sock & sandal (looks like ankle boots!) combination help to bring the girlyness down to a really cool spot.

But, on the other hand, I still can’t get enough of these darker, less overtly feminine looks that characterize fall so well! Pants, navy blue, stripes, leather… I’ve been having a cool time trying to thrift pieces like this, it seems so much harder because it’s trickier to pick out a cool black item from a rack than it is a printed, bright thing. It’s so much easier when the fabric pops out at you! I’m becoming more and more in love with non-synthetic fabrics, like linen or silk… when I’m thrifting in the black colored section of a rack I often just feel for nice fabrics before I even bother to look at an item. I found a really beautiful silk tank top in Victoria using that method (still need to take pictures!), and today at the Value Village I found a dark navy blue linen jacket by Ralph Lauren that has a great little toggle button, it reminds me of a casual sailing jacket or something you’d wear to the beach on a cold day to collect sea glass. Your style branding works, RL! The fabric just feels so nice to have on, I can’t wait to wear it.

This seems like an appropriate time to mention some really nice accessories that Kathryn is making. I came across her pictures because of a post by Ringo, Have a Banana and I love how she has perfectly captured the delicate balance between feminine and too girly. Maybe for some people anything with a ruffle or a big fancy pom pom is automatically too fancy, but it would be so great paired with something really plain like a basic black shift dress, or some black pants and a silk button-down (with cuffs of course! who knew I could love cuffs so much?). I think Kathryn is planning to open a shop, so keep an eye out for her beautiful items!

I hear you on thrifting black items! It takes a lot of stamina. At my favorite haunt, there is an entire, very long row lined on both sides with nothing but black pants. I find that I’m only able to tackle it when I have a friend in tow–strength in numbers, I guess. Anyway, I’ve really been digging your posts lately–thank you!

the blouses are beautiful! i too agree about thrifting black. i find that many black garments are so faded that you wouldn’t want to wear it, even if it was a cool piece. i’ll have to try your sensory method

i totally saw those cool accessories on siri’s blog, too, and they have been in the back of my mind ever since. i keep thinking of a d.i.y., but i should probably just support her shop and buy something instead.
anyway, this is a really great post. you really do have some of the best inspiration posts!
