Antique Dreams Come True
November 4th, 2009

I’m going to backtrack a bit so that I can catch up on posts… so, let me tell you about the antique expo! It was great, as usual. The fall one is my favorite because so many vendors have out all their old Halloween ephemera, like black cats and masks, postcards galore and tons of smiling pumpkins. It’s always a long day, and this time Julianna (see her post about the expo here) and I were pretty bummed that the kettle corn vendor was nowhere to be found. No treat at the end of a long day, what a sad thing. Luckily, there were tons of great things to see inside, like Humpty Dumpty and lil’ miss Clo Pinn up there! I wish I could have taken them home, but they were $50 and $60 apiece, yikes!

From top to bottom: some PERFECT old green shoes with scallop edges, the cutest grumpy bunny slippers ever, and a super spooky and amazing Victorian fur shawl/scarf thing with taxidermy BAT HEADS on it! Woah. Pretty incredible. So, what did I buy? I found a 50’s shirt dress that I forgot to photograph for this post, and the items you’ll see below, which includes a 1920’s pink cotton ribbed super long top (I can’t wait to wear this in the summer, or to bed), a fancy crystal, and a selection of old photos:

The photo following the cat makes me so happy. I’ve never seen a shot quite like that one before, I love how it’s so low to the ground and there’s nothing else around, just a chill kitty out for a walk. You can read what’s written on the back of the photo here. The ghostly lady in that fancy interior is pretty neat, I especially like seeing the way the frames are hung and all the textures on the furniture and carpet. What is up with that crazy big door? The little girl in the woods has the cutest dress on, and the gang of tough girls is just too good to be true. I’d love to hang with those ladies in a secret club house and muck around or whatever. The girls reading/sewing (?) might be more Campfire Girls, and the last one of the lady in the river reminds me of this photo of Betty Jayne, which is one of my all-time favorites. Man, I just love old photos. I could say it a million times.
This brings me to the piece de resistance, something I have been deeply coveting for over a year. The sale happened a couple days before my birthday, and when I explained to the vendors how much I was in love with this item they gave me a good deal. Well, an okay deal. After a year I figured I would just go for it. I’ll give you a little peek to see if any longtime readers recognize it:

Do those photos in the middle ring a bell? I’ve posted about them before, it is that amazing album from the 20’s and 30’s that has all the old outfit photos in it! I stopped dead in my tracks when I found it on the shelf at this expo, because last time (in the spring) it wasn’t there and I figured someone else had already bought it. And man, I was bummed! But then, it magically came back to me and there was no way I could let it go for a third time. The album is huge, and since almost all the photos are held in by photo corners I’ll be able to take them out to scan everything in. There aren’t a lot more outfit photos other than what I already posted, but the whole thing is a really charming collection and there are some great images in there. Lots of scrapbook items too, like tickets to see Glen Miller and a pennant from a trip to Washington D.C. I feel really lucky to finally have this book! It is absolutely a prized possession. Oh, antique expo. You never fail me! Except for that fucking POPCORN! Next time, I’ll eat a million bags to make up for it.

You always find the best old photos–that one of the girls reading especially! What a great expo.

That taxidermy bats shawl is insane. Never heard ofanything like that. It looks like something a supervillain femme fatale would wear (except of course, the bats should be alive and help her to achieve her devilish plans).

Oh wow!!! How exciting that you finally were able to get the album–it’s fate!
Oooh… I cannot wait to see all the amazing photos that you’re going to scan!
Seeing this post is making me long to go to an antique expo like this. I love those sorts of huge, overwhelming, but so fun days spend rummaging.

How awesome! I’m glad that album came back to you. And the antique expo look sooooo fun… I am totally jealous! Maybe I should time my next trip back to California around an antique expo
