SMILE MAGAZINE

I found this amazing magazine at a comic store called Cosmic Monkey here in Portland and I totally treasure it, it’s like the holy grail of magazines for my teenage self. Also hello, galactic style? It’s perfect! I know everyone is always like, “OMG Sassy was the only good magazine ever” but I had never even heard of Sassy until a few years ago, I dunno why? My teenage magazine history (like, around 13-14) was all about garbage like Seventeen or YM or Delia’s catalogs. Or sometimes I would go to the library and read old issues of Spin and Rolling Stone but I think overall I felt pretty “whatever” about it. Maybe I wasn’t super into magazines because I was too busy racking up a major internet bill by staying up all night in chat rooms. OK BUT SMILE MAGAZINE- we were meant to be. Except for the thing about the Moffatts, because they were like Hanson, and they both sucked.

This is actually more relevant to me now than when I was younger, because I am semi-obsessed with the robot dog Aibo. I really wish I had an Aibo! I don’t think they make them anymore and they are super expensive (over $1000 usually!). Aibo just chills in your house and walks around and does stuff, and it recognizes you (!!!) and it has a pink ball that it rolls around. It’s kind of an idiot and that’s why I like it. The best thing about Aibo is that it can KEEP A BLOG. A blog that no one reads, except for the owner. Sometimes the Aibo makes stuff up and it also hates babies. I have a collection of Aibo blog screenshots of some of my favorite Aibo blog posts (from various Aibos), including interaction from their owners and the documentation of Aibos hating babies. Also: “R U Ready for Y2K?” On Y2K NYE someone turned off all the lights and we were like “OMG Y2K” but then they were like, “JK.”

GALACTIC STYLE TIPS! The fashion spread in this magazine is so awkward and therefore adorable. But like, that all-white track pants plus sandals look is actually pretty sweet.

ORIGINAL MANGA DRAWING CONTEST? Me and Rachel would have been all over this shit.

The icing on the cake is that every issue (I guess? I only have one) has a translated portion of Sailormoon manga. Bonus icing on the cake: the one in this issue is from Sailormoon S, which was totally the best one, duh. Saturn was such a goth. They also have a comic in it called Sushi Girl (great name).

In conclusion: thanks for existing, Smile Magazine. Also, is it your fault that I have been hoping that I find a tamagotchi in the thrift store? For some reason I really want a tamagotchi.

Tamagochi: there’s an app for that. I was playing around with it on my iphone and I had forgotten how needy they are; I accidentally killed it in a night.

I got the app! Mine sleeps for a super long time? It’s funny that if it doesn’t eat you have to smack it.

I remember that magazine. From Tokyopop. They had one called MixxZine too. Brings back memories!
I still have my Tamagotchi. I got batteries a couple years ago and brought it back to life, but my Tamagotchi didn’t survive very long. Now I’m grown up, I have to go to work every day and my Tamagotchi’s constant care did NOT allow for me to leave it while I worked!!

They are definitely super bratty and needy, haha. I might just do it long enough for it to transform from a blob into something else.

I still have my tamagatchi! He is in a cyan blue egg :) (one of those instances that I’m thankful I’m a keepsake hoarder.)

Aw cute!! I can’t remember what mine looked like, but I can definitely remember hanging out at my locker and comparing tamagotchis with people.

AIBO!!! I hassled my parents for an Aibo for so long because they wouldn’t let me have furry animals and I desperately wanted a pet. I had no idea they could keep blogs. Send me some Aibo blogs! Also, it would have been really funny to have an Aibo, and then go to college or something. Oh hey, this is my robotic dog, yeah I had an awesome childhood.

Also, I never had a Tamagotchi, but where I lived, Gigapets were really popular. They were basically the cheap American equivalent, I think? This was mine: http://www.strengthtech.com/artwork/products/animated/doganim.gif

I don’t have any Aibo blogs bookmarked but one time I found a directory of LOTS of them, try to search for that! It makes me sad that your parents wouldn’t let you have a pet. At least now you have ARTHUR!!!

My Tamagotchi is still at my parents’ house, in a box somewhere. Maybe I’ll pass it along if I find it!

I also used to have a cheapo version called DinoPet. I liked it even better than Tamagotchi – if you accidentally were to kill it, it would appear as an angel dinosaur with x’s over its eyes. But this one time during exams at school, I wasn’t paying quite enough attention to it. I mean…enough to keep it alive, but it was becoming a BAD dinosaur. So when it finally died, it sprouted devil horns and bat wings, and I didn’t even know it could DO that! I was so surprised when I flipped open my Five Star zip-up notebook to see a devil dino scowling and flapping angrily at me. I felt like a bad dino mother, but it was also pretty awesome.

Hahahahahahaha, the layout and awkwardness of this magazine brings back 90s memories. Remember geocities homepages with awful layouts and action gifs? Oh my gosh, and y2k!!!! Thanks so much for posting this. Made my day.
