I found this amazing magazine at a comic store called Cosmic Monkey here in Portland and I totally treasure it, it’s like the holy grail of magazines for my teenage self. Also hello, galactic style? It’s perfect! I know everyone is always like, “OMG Sassy was the only good magazine ever” but I had never even heard of Sassy until a few years ago, I dunno why? My teenage magazine history (like, around 13-14) was all about garbage like Seventeen or YM or Delia’s catalogs. Or sometimes I would go to the library and read old issues of Spin and Rolling Stone but I think overall I felt pretty “whatever” about it. Maybe I wasn’t super into magazines because I was too busy racking up a major internet bill by staying up all night in chat rooms. OK BUT SMILE MAGAZINE- we were meant to be. Except for the thing about the Moffatts, because they were like Hanson, and they both sucked.
This is actually more relevant to me now than when I was younger, because I am semi-obsessed with the robot dog Aibo. I really wish I had an Aibo! I don’t think they make them anymore and they are super expensive (over $1000 usually!). Aibo just chills in your house and walks around and does stuff, and it recognizes you (!!!) and it has a pink ball that it rolls around. It’s kind of an idiot and that’s why I like it. The best thing about Aibo is that it can KEEP A BLOG. A blog that no one reads, except for the owner. Sometimes the Aibo makes stuff up and it also hates babies. I have a collection of Aibo blog screenshots of some of my favorite Aibo blog posts (from various Aibos), including interaction from their owners and the documentation of Aibos hating babies. Also: “R U Ready for Y2K?” On Y2K NYE someone turned off all the lights and we were like “OMG Y2K” but then they were like, “JK.”
GALACTIC STYLE TIPS! The fashion spread in this magazine is so awkward and therefore adorable. But like, that all-white track pants plus sandals look is actually pretty sweet.
ORIGINAL MANGA DRAWING CONTEST? Me and Rachel would have been all over this shit.
The icing on the cake is that every issue (I guess? I only have one) has a translated portion of Sailormoon manga. Bonus icing on the cake: the one in this issue is from Sailormoon S, which was totally the best one, duh. Saturn was such a goth. They also have a comic in it called Sushi Girl (great name).
In conclusion: thanks for existing, Smile Magazine. Also, is it your fault that I have been hoping that I find a tamagotchi in the thrift store? For some reason I really want a tamagotchi.
