Painted Frocks

July 31st, 2009

Hey, suddenly it’s Friday! I spent this week hunched over a little table, watching (well, mostly listening) all of Season 1 and up to the current episodes of True Blood (Sookeh!!!!!!), as well as Party Down (so funny), while painting little old dresses and other bits of clothing for my art show next week. I’m doing ten paintings like the one above, all painted versions of ebay photos of antique clothing that I didn’t win (or didn’t try to win). Sort of a way of making these pieces mine without having to actually own the item.  I had this idea a while ago and it took a super short deadline to kick my ass into gear and get working on them, so far I like how they’re turning out! The blue dress above was the first, and I finished the seventh one today. My neck is killing me! I don’t know how my artist friends do it!

I think I might show my Billuminati drawings along with them, because there’s a decent amount of wall space and they’re already finished. Plus, they are very guy-friendly and I don’t want to only have super girly stuff. Frocks and Freemasons, that works, right? I hope so! I have to scavenge and paint a ton of frames this weekend, wish me thrift luck!

    FREEMASONS!!!!

I have a dvd on freemasons and about twenty books. yessss to mixing fashion with dorky conspiracy theories!

and on a side note, my non spam word entry deal that I must type to post this is ‘Eiteman’s wartiest’. I swear every time I post, these word spam things get weirder and weirder.

    lovely drawing!

Hope your neck doesn’t give you too much trouble through the rest of your frock painting marathon. I am quite taken with the idea :-) (and the execution is lovely too of course).

Have a nice day now :-[ (that’s meant to be a fanged smiley)

Frocks and Freemasons has a certain ring to it! Plus it’s totally you, so it’s gotta work! Maybe you could paint a few freemasons modeling old frocks just to tie it all together! ha!

What a totally wicked idea, the billuminati. Hilarious and awesome. Ther frocks also look like something to hang onto one’s walls. I wish I could see them in real live paper flesh.

oh i love your painting! that’s so cool. it reminds me of this book… did you ever read “the hundred dresses” when you were a kid? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hundred_Dresses

  • 11. Sarah  |  August 1st, 2009 at 8:26 pm

That painting is just beautiful. Erin’s comment is exactly what I thought of too, “The Hundred Dresses”! I think I share your same motivation for wanting to paint what I can’t have – except mine always seem to be of ladies in rococo gowns!

Lots of luck preparing for your show. (and I hope your neck feels – painting for too long can really do quite a number on your alignment!)

What a fantastic idea! At first glance, I thought this was actually a real dress.

A great painting and a beautiful dress! Those are the last two shows I’ve been watching too.

You’re having an art show!! That’s so cool! Well, good luck with it! I love your painted dresses idea! It’s funny I also had an Ebay-inspired project this year, but I’ve only showed it in school. I can’t wait to see pictures of the show and the other painted dresses :)

I love your idea for painting beautiful clothes which got away, I am constantly sketching such things myself, though I have no talent at it! I love True Blood, too, it is so trashy and excellent.

Oh she’s SO lovely! I’ve been working on a little series of fashion plates as of late, too!! I think of it in much the same light as you….since I might never get to own or event try on some of these dreamy frocks….why not at least paint them!! :)

I’m over the moon for your art show!! WOW!! Congratulations!! That’s SO lovely! :)
