The Uniform Project
June 11th, 2009

Could you wear one dress for an entire year? A girl from NYC is doing just that, called The Uniform Project. Not only is it a major lesson in creativity, since the dress has to be worn every day (handmade by a friend of hers, and there is one identical dress for each day of the week), it is also raising money for theAkanksha Foundation. You should check out her site to read more about the project, and follow her daily outfit updates. Here are a couple of my favorites:

I wish I had a dress like that, since it can be so versatile! According to her site, it can be worn forwards and backwards, or open as a tunic/jacket, and has big secret hidden pockets so that she can avoid carrying a purse. Sounds perfect to me! It’s amazing that she can make it look so different in each photo, she’s already 41 days into the project too so there are plenty more cool outfits to look at. I love the dainty little scalloped edges on the left photo, and how those red platforms look so perfect with the matching tights. She looks like a cute little Robin Hood flapper in the stripes, except she’s just accepting donations and not stealing from the rich, haha. I’m looking forward to seeing what else she comes up with!

I adore all 3 of these looks. Wow, this is so impressive! I don’t think I could do that :O More power to her, though!

Gah! I just spent ages writing a comment and then my stupid internet timed out.. anyway.. this is great. And so cool that it’s for a worthy cause. By the look of these outfits you posted it doesn’t look like she’ll have any problems coming up with something stylish and original every day!

I just wanted to drop you a comment (I’m usually terrible about ‘lurking’) and let you know that there was another woman who wore the same dress (albeit not as fashionable as this young lady seems to be) for a whole year. You can find info on her here http://www.littlebrowndress.com/

How inspiring! I’m not sure I could be 1/100th as creative with the same dress as this gal is! I love the outfit; so late 60s…

pretty cool, although not an original idea…this was already done by the amazing artist andrea zittel, who also makes really fascinating all-in-one living spaces/portables. check it out!

That’s pretty amazing… I wish I had a dress like that, too! 1 for every day of the week? Yes, please. I would gladly [try to] wear it every day!

What a neat project! She looks like she will have no trouble keeping it fresh. The last look you posted with the red tights is definitely my favourite, though. I really love the versatility of the dress – her friend was quite clever in designing it to be worn in so many ways. I especially like the back of the dress with its many buttons. Isn’t it wonderful how people become so creative when they don’t or can’t have much to work with?
