Elvira Madigan

July 21st, 2010

I just watched Elvira Madigan, a sweet, sad and quiet Swedish film from 1967 about the ill-fated love between Elvira, a Danish tightrope walker runaway and Sixten, a military deserter from the Swedish army. They were real people, and the film is about their time together trying to make an impossible relationship work while they are wandering through the countryside trying to keep their identities a secret. Below, photos of the real couple:

This movie is quite beautiful, with soft colors and romantic clothing. They keep playing this one piece of music over and over again though, sort of in a funny way- every time their theme came on I was a little tired of it, haha. The dresses in the film reminded me a bit of this piece by Loup Charmant, an organic cotton label based in NYC.

I took a lot of screen caps during this film, I couldn’t get enough of these great colors! So, enjoy- and I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys pastoral scenes and tragic romances, or just 60′s films in general!

So lovely! I’ve just put this on hold at the library, I can’t wait to see it. Weird, Swedish, girly, 60s – pretty much perfect.
